AIW Workshop : The Library of Congress: How to Best Use the Research Materials Available There, July 22, 2010

June 18, 2010

Welcome back to American Independent Writers! We can tell you've been here before...so can we assume you're a member? If so, great! If not, we'd love to have you. Consider this your personal invitation to join -- or renew your existing membership.

SOLD OUT EVENT! THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS:
How to best use the research materials available there, Thursday, July 22, 2010, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Library of Congress offers the writer access to an amazing amount of original material, huge collections of primary and secondary resource, and hundreds of subscription databases (many full-text) that are not freely available on the Internet, but which are free to users in the Library’s reading rooms.

Mann will discuss many different ways to do subject searching–there’s much more to it than just thinking up keywords–and will explain clearly what is in the Library that is not on the Internet; he will also provide an overview of the various databases (and other resources) that are accessible only onsite.

Thomas Mann is a reference specialist in the Humanities and Social Sciences Division of the Library of Congress. He is the author of The Oxford Guide to Library Research and Library Research Models, both from Oxford University Press. Mann also worked as a private detective before joining the Library of Congress. He has worked with many of our members over the years on a wide variety of research projects.
