FWF Initiatives

Current and Planned Initiatives

The AIW Freedom to Write Fund is committed to advancing the cause of writers, whose work is essential to a democratic society, through three current initiatives:

WRITERS ACTION GROUP (WAG)

An innovative approach to the shrinkage of traditional media, which aims to take advantage of the opportunities presented by new media, this professionally led journalism venture will:

  • Explore new forms of organization and content distribution to achieve financial self-sufficiency; and
  • Produce in-depth and investigative reporting on trends of critical importance to writers, and thus to the health of democratic institutions, including:
    • Access to public and private information
    • Protections for, and threats to, free expression
    • Ownership of written content, including copyright laws

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENT WRITERS

For decades a force for writers, AIW is expanding its educational programming to a broader geographic audience.  To that end, FWF will support:

  • Online learning methods
  • Monthly workshops and quarterly day-long seminars on the craft and trade of writing
  • An annual conference with leaders in the publishing and writing communities

ADVOCACY

FWF advocates on behalf of writers on critical public issues, including free expression, writers’ access to information, and the ownership of written content.  FWF’s efforts include helping writers obtain legal representation and participating as friend-of-the-court in landmark litigation.
